1. gum up the works
想(xiang)象(xiang)一(yi)下(xia)要(yao)是(shi)把(ba)粘(zhan)膠(jiao)之(zhi)類(lei)的(de)東(dong)西(xi)灌(guan)進(jin)馬(ma)達(da)裏(li)去(qu),會(hui)出(chu)現(xian)什(shen)麼(me)樣(yang)的(de)情(qing)況(kuang)呢(ne)? 其(qi)實(shi)gum up the works這個習慣用語出典就在這兒。
1:I think we better leave Joe out of our first meeting with this new customer. Joe means well, but I'm afraid he'll say something stupid and really gum up the works for us.
有時,gum up the works也可以簡化成gum up,意思不變。
2:When I got to the meeting in Chicago and opened my proposal, I found out Ryan had put the wrong proposal inside. He certainly gummed up our chances to win a nice fat contract.
2. beat one's gums
3:If I didn't hear my men beating their gums about how bad the chow was, or how hard they worked, I worried. When they were too quiet, I was afraid they were losing their fighting spirit.
要(yao)是(shi)我(wo)聽(ting)不(bu)到(dao)我(wo)的(de)部(bu)下(xia)沒(mei)完(wan)沒(mei)了(le)地(di)抱(bao)怨(yuan)夥(huo)食(shi)有(you)多(duo)差(cha)勁(jin),或(huo)者(zhe)他(ta)們(men)幹(gan)活(huo)有(you)多(duo)辛(xin)苦(ku),那(na)我(wo)就(jiu)得(de)擔(dan)心(xin)了(le)。當(dang)他(ta)們(men)過(guo)於(yu)沉(chen)默(mo)的(de)時(shi)候(hou),我(wo)害(hai)怕(pa)他(ta)們(men)的(de)鬥(dou)誌(zhi)消(xiao)沉(chen)了(le)。
4:Look, you don't want to get a desk anywhere close to that guy Oscar. He'll drive you crazy - he loves to beat his gums anytime he has anybody close enough to be an audience for him.
