想必很多人被問到WC這兩個字母組合的時候，都會異口同聲地回答是：“公共廁所”。但WC全稱卻是water closet，意同lavatory，指的是抽水馬桶。而在英語中表達廁所的單詞有很多，例如，在英式英語中，私人住宅中的廁所成為the lavatory、toilet，公共場所的廁所稱為the Gents/the Ladies；在美式英語中，私人住宅中的廁所稱為the lavatory、toilet或bathroom，在公共建築物中的稱為the washroom或rest room。因此可以看出，城市街頭所見的“WC”標識的本質意思並不是公共廁所，而是指在私人家庭裏麵的抽水馬桶並且是過了時的舊式用法。
